How to view Tamil Characters on the PC.
EditMethod1: Using Asian Language support feature. (for Windows 2000 - XP)
This method allows you to view and type tamil characters. This method is only for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (Windows Installation CD is required).

For Windows XP
1) You will need admin Right *so get TA to log in as ADMIN for you* |
2)
You need to have Unicode Tamil fonts installed on your computer and the
Operating System capable of rendering Tamil Scripts. Windows XP comes
with a Unicode Tamil Font (Latha)
3) In the Control Panel,
in Regional/Languages Options you will need to ensure that 'Complex
script' option is checked. (You May need windows XP installation CD)
4) After Checking, press 'Apply and OK', then it will prompt you to restart the PC. |

| 5) After the PC has been restarted, load the Tamil Quiz in Internet Explorer |
6) It might look like this

7) Its Looks funny because (the page encoding is not set to 'unicode' ) so:-
in Internet Explorer, go to View > Enciding > Unicode.

8) And the Quiz will Look like this. (problem solved)

9) Note In Edulearn, for Chinese or Tamil Quizzes (DO NOT Randomize the Quiz), as in Randomize Question or Option or section. as it will create a problem like this:-

10) So Remember to Disable all Randomization option in Edulearn Quiz, by:-
a) unchecking all randomization options
b) set the character set to 'Unicode'
c) press 'Update' to save your Settings
d) Press Publish Quiz (to regenerate the Quiz)

11) In Internet Explorer, if you would like to see the Tamil characters in a different Tamil Font,
you can go to : Tools > Internet Options > Font
Under
'Language Script' > Choose 'Tamil' and it will show you the font you
can use, choose the fonts of your preference and press ok.

| Typing Tamil
With
this function installed, you can also type tamil characters in any
windows application or in edulearn. To type tamil characters, To do this
1) Click on Start > Control Panel > Regional/Languages Options
2) Click on the 'Language tab', next click on 'Details' Button

3) Click on 'Add'
4) In the 'Input Language' > Select 'tamil' and then press 'O.K'

5) Next, click on 'Language Bar' and check the 2 available options and press 'O.K' twice.

6)
Tamil language input support has been installed, to begin tying in
tamil, move your mouse to the task bar at the bottom of your screen,
click on it and choose 'Tami'

TopEditMethod 2: Kanian Font installation (for Windows 98 - XP)
(this method will work for windows 98 - windows xp) provided Kanian software was used to create the (quiz or course)

If the Quiz was created using Kanian tamil font, then you will need to install four 'Kanian-Tamilnet' fonts in your PC.
1) Download this Zip File [Kanian Tamil Font]
2) Unzip the content of the zip file (there are a total of 4 files) Use WinZip to unzip the fonts.
 3) Save these fonts to the Fonts folder in your Control Panel.

EditMethod 3: Using TaMMaduram Font (for Windows 98 - XP)
This method might work for windows 98 - windows xp) This method also allows you to view and type tamil characters by using the 'On-Screen Keyboard'

This 3rd Method, would allow you to view and type tamil characters.
1) Download the TaMMaduram Font
[ Download] and save to c:\
2) Go to Start > Control Panel > Fonts
3) Go to File > Install New Font (As shown in the image below)

4) Install the Font (refer to the image below)

To view Tamil Font Keyboard Layout
1) Select Start > Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard

2) You see the keyboard layout as shown below:-
3) Select Settings > Fonts

4) The keyboard should change to the following:-

5) To View the tamil characters in Edulearn, IN Internet Explorer, go to ' View > Encoding > More > Unicode', with the keyboard running you can use it to input tamil characters.
